Jamaican students could get new transit card
4 Jun 2010

Students in Jamaica could soon have access to their own customised transit cards, reports the Jamaica information website jjs.gov.jm.

Michael Henry, minister of transport and works, has urged the nations transport authority to integrate their own current travel system with campus cards.

Students would have access to the Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) contactless smart card, which allows commuters to enjoy the speed and security of cashless payments.

The proposed move would also allow students to travel at a subsidised rate on buses run by the JUTC.

Cards would include details such as the name of the institution the student attends to clearly distinguish those who are eligible for discount fares.

Officials plan to introduce a similar scheme for pensioners to ensure elderly people are charged the correct rate each time they travel.

Mr Henry confirmed that the company had set a target for smart card usage at 25 per cent of its revenue for the 2010 - 2011 financial year.
