Ken Livingstone: Northern Line upgrade 'may not happen'
27 Jun 2011

Users of the London Underground (LU) transit system may never reap the benefits of the proposed upgrades to the Northern Line.

According to former mayor of London Ken Livingstone, the work was due to be completed by 2018 when he was in office, but that seems unlikely now.

This means Oyster card holders who use the transit system will have to wait even longer to see an improved Tube service.

Mike Brown, managing director of LU, said funding is not in place for work to begin on the proposed upgrade.

"I have a real feeling that it isn't going to happen," Mr Livingstone said.

At the end of last week, Tube workers who are members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport union announced they would not hold walkouts which were scheduled to take place this week.

They said they were calling the strike action off after the LU reinstated sacked worker Arwyn Thomas.
