London transit system to receive improvements
30 Nov 2011
It has been announced in chancellor George Osborne's Autumn Statement that the London transit system is to receive a raft of improvements.
There will be new Thames crossings, additions to the M25 and an extension of the Oyster card system to provide better links for travellers.
Mayor Boris Johnson told the London Evening Standard he is pleased with the new measures.
"We had to fight for several elements of this package. But the chancellor understands the vital importance of investing in London and the London economy."
Some £45 million is to be put into the Oyster scheme to mean people will be able to use it in the south-east, including Guildford.
Mr Johnson said this will be a "great boon to travellers".
Earlier this month, a YouGov survey revealed that 76 per cent of people living in the capital possess an Oyster card to make the most of contactless payment technology.
