London Underground preparing for contactless bank card payments
11 Mar 2011
The London Underground network will be ready to accept contactless bank card payments by the end of 2012, it has been reported.
According to Techland, Transport for London is preparing to overhaul its entire ticketing system so that passengers can make contactless e-payments using their bank cards, as well as their Oyster cards.
It is intended that all of the city's buses will be upgraded in time for the Olympic Games, with the new system to be rolled out on underground lines by the end of the year.
Millions of contactless bank cards have already been issued in countries around the world, however the news provider suggests that such a large-scale rollout of the technology will make London a global leader in terms of e-money payments.
"Security works just like normal credit card security," it explained. "If your card gets stolen or goes missing, report it to your bank and the card will get cancelled."
Meanwhile, new figures obtained by Caroline Pidgeon, leader of the Liberal Democrats on the London Assembly, suggest that most London commuters do not know they are entitled to compensation if they face delays of 15 minutes or more.
