London Underground stations receive listed status
28 Jul 2011
Commuters using the London Underground to travel to work may be interested in recent developments concerning a number of stations.
According to reports, 16 of the capital's transit system buildings have been awarded listed status by culture minister John Penrose.
The selected red-brick stations, which are of Edwardian baroque de*scent, included Oxford Circus, Covent Garden and Russell Square and have all been granted grade II listed protection.
As part of the scheme, Mr Penrose claimed the city's tube stations are among the most attractive buildings in the city and a "great example of the capital's hidden heritage".
"Millions of people pass through London's underground system every day, with little thought for the historic design and architectural features that are right under their nose," he added.
Last week, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport announced the launch of an artistic scheme featuring work from a range of craftspeople to be displayed at the prime minister's residence.
