London's transit system 'will keep moving this winter'
16 Dec 2011
The authorities responsible for London's transit systems have insisted that the capital will keep moving this winter, even if cold weather hits again.
Transport for London (TfL), mayor Boris Johnson and London Councils have worked together to create a plan should ice and snow begin to affect the roads and railways.
More than 100,000 tonnes of salt have been brought in across the capital, while engineers are on standby for the London Underground in case points fail.
Heaters and remote monitoring technology are also in place throughout the Tube to solve potential issues more quickly.
Last year, the underground fared relatively well and Mr Johnson is hoping this will be the case again.
He commented: "Hundreds of workers will be toiling across the winter, ensuring that commuters can commute, shoppers can shop and tourists can continue to tour our great city."
Unfortunately, would-be Tube travellers will not be able to use their contactless payment cards on December 26th 2011, January 16th or February 3rd and 13th 2012, as it has been confirmed that drivers are to strike on these days.
