M6 toll road to offer contactless payments
20 May 2011

Travellers around Birmingham who regularly use the M6 toll road will be able to pay for the service by contactless methods soon.

Barclaycard is working with the road service so that contactless credit and debit cards can be used to slip through booths with ease.

Set to come into force as early as February 2012, the scheme will first be trialled on a single lane of the M6 toll road, though there are plans for every card-accepting booth to have this option in place soon after.

"The introduction of contactless is the latest step in making card payment as quick and easy as using the road itself," commented Tom Fanning, chief executive of the M6 Toll.

Prices for using the M6 Toll Booth currently range from the lowest figure of £1.80 for Class 1 motorists – such as motorcycles – between 23:00 and 06:00, to a high of £10.60 for Class 5 and 6 vehicles, like HGVs and coaches, when they pass through during a weekday.
