Merseytravel set to launch smartcard technology
9 Aug 2011
Commuters looking for a more efficient method of paying for journeys using public transport transit systems could be interested in a recent announcement from Merseytravel.
The passenger transport executive has announced plans to launch a method of contactless payment to allow travellers to pre-pay for outings.
Similar to London's Oyster Card, the invention is set to make boarding times a more pleasant experience for both passengers and transport staff alike.
The contactless payment system, which will be launched in October, has already seen the installation of card readers across the region's bus network.
Merseytravel's Chief Executive Neil Scales told the Liverpool Daily Post: "I am quite excited about this, it will help attract more people onto public transport."
This news comes after travel campaigners in Scotland called for the development of a travel smartcard to reduce queuing time during busy travel periods.
Individuals demanding the introduction of the advanced technology also believe more efficient methods of ticketing could result in an increase in people leaving their cars at home.
