Montreal to introduce contactless smart cards
28 Sep 2009
Contactless smart cards are to be introduced in Montreal, Canada and will be used throughout the region's public transport network.
The Societe de Transport de Montreal (STM) has chosen Oberthur Technologies to supply the technology.
Frederic Chevreton, General Manager of the payment product line of the card systems division at Oberthur, said that the world is moving into a "new era of contactless technologies" and his company is "dedicated" to providing such facilities.
"This successful new contract with STM strengthens our position in the Canadian transit market," he remarked, before adding that the business' secure microprocessor contactless cards represent the future of public transport.
In the UK, eCash network sQuidcard has rolled out contactless smart cards for the people of Bolton, Greater Manchester, who can use the technology to pay for bus travel in the local area.
Bolton benefits from a wider cashless society too, as the sQuidcard can be used to pay for items in various shops and restaurants throughout the town.
