More e-money options available to US transit passengers
27 Sep 2010

US residents will soon have more e-money payment options when using public transport in New York and Los Angeles.

Visa has announced that it has launched a pilot scheme in New York and New Jersey, allowing passengers to pay for bus, subway and train fares with a contactless card or a mobile phone.

Cardholders simply hold the card over the provided reader to complete a transaction, while mobile phone users can attach a sticker to their handset which facilitates payment.

Earlier this month, Visa began rolling out prepaid cards to commuters in Los Angeles which they can use to ride the city's metro system. The cards can also be used to pay for goods and services where Visa is accepted.

Jim McCarthy, global head of products at Visa, said: "For commuters, paying with Visa means no more fumbling for change or worrying about lost transitcards. For transit authorities, accepting Visa means better customer service, integrated collections and the potential for increased ridership."
