MP calls for smartcards on all UK public transport
19 Apr 2011
One politician is calling for contactless smart cards to be introduced on public transport systems around the UK.
In an article for the Liberal Democrat Voice, the party's MP for Lewes Norman Baker claimed the country needs to be "smarter" and improve how people make their journeys.
One way to do this, he claimed, is to use Oyster-style contactless smart cards.
Mr Baker pointed out that many people living in the capital already use them and they allow individuals to use both the tube and buses with ease.
They are also cheaper than the prices of a normal ticket and the party wants the majority of journeys in the UK to be made using smartcards by the end of 2014.
"I want to see this concept expanded to the whole country and I am working at the [Department for Transport] to achieve this," he continued.
Writing for NewsOK recently, Lonely Planet US travel editor and spokesman Robert Reid said Oyster cards are the easiest and cheapest way to get around London.
