Mumbai's integrated transit card system set to be launched in 2011
17 Dec 2010
Mumbai's integrated transit card system will be launched in December 2011, according to the city's public transport agency.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has confirmed that passengers will be able to travel on the city's rail, bus, metro and monorail services with a single card from the end of next year, reports The Hindustan Times.
Ratnakar Gaikwad, metropolitan commissioner, expressed his belief that the new technology will help commuters travel across the city seamlessly.
He told the news provider: "Integrated ticketing system is a step in the right direction, as it will not only strengthen the existing systems, but will also go a long way in providing the much-needed accessibility across transportation systems."
Residents of the Indian city can already use the Go Mumbai bus card to pay for travel and this has recently been integrated with the country's Central and Western Railways network.
