Netherlands transit systems 'transition to OV-chipkaart'
10 Aug 2009

A guide has been issued for people in the Netherlands on handling the new payment system for transit systems.

Help was given on Expatica to people navigating the new OV-chipkaart system being rolled out in the region.

Currently, the paper strippenkart method, by which cards are stamped on a journey, is still in use in most regions and is valid if the OV-chipkaart system has not been fully launched for the transit systems.

Those visiting the country are told that they can expect the local media to announce the continuing rollout of the scheme, including which transit systems support the OV-chipkaart method.

Smart cards can be issued to a specific individual, or on an anonymous basis and can be loaded with credit from bank accounts.

The OV-chipkaart eCash method is being rolled out to more and more places in the Netherlands during the course of this year.

sQuidcard offers UK users similar ease of payment on transit systems, with the eCash cards due to be introduced soon on buses in Bolton, Greater Manchester.
