New contactless smart card introduced in Auckland
5 Apr 2011

A new contactless smart card has been launched in New Zealand to make it easier for people to get around.

The new HOP card will allow those living in Auckland access to all of the city's public transport services with just one piece of plastic.

It is thought that the integrated ticket card could save people up to 17 per cent on the cost of their journeys.

Operating in a similar way to the London Underground's Osyter cards, the plastic will allow individuals to top it up at their convenience and simply swipe it across a reader when they board public transport.

Transport minister Steven Joyce stated: "As I've said a number of times before, if we're serious about supporting the growth of our largest city we need all our transport modes working efficiently."

In the UK, the Brighton Argus recently reported that the entire Brighton and Hove Bus Company fleet has been equipped with machines ready for the launch of a new contactless smart card payment system.
