New Delhi transit card to be expanded
14 Feb 2012
A transit card scheme in New Delhi which is currently only open to Metro passengers could be expanded across the city's bus and taxi services.
In a recent meeting, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) was requested to look at the possibility of allowing the Delhi Metro smart card to be used on buses run by the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC), as well as so-called 'cluster' buses and taxis.
"Since the automated fare collection system is already successfully operational in Delhi Metro, replicating it on the cluster and DTC bus system would be simple," a senior government official told Times of India.
"Delhi integrated multi-modal transit system (DIMTS) has been asked to provide the necessary information so that the database can be updated with the Delhi Metro's backend operations."
Should the proposals come into force, it would represent a step towards the introduction of a single transit card which could be used to pay for travel on all forms of transport in the city.
