New Denver transit card programme unveiled
5 Oct 2010

A new transit card programme is being developed in Denver which allows users to pay for travel with electronic money.

Local transport authority Regional Transportation District (RTD) of Denver has signed a four-year contract with smart card supplier Affiliated Computer Services (ACS) worth $15 million (£9.5 million).

The RTD will issue the free cards to residents, who simply have to top up their account in order to begin using the technology.

Dave Amoriell, group president of transportation solutions at ACS, claimed both the city and public transport users will profit from the technology.

He said: "Denver wanted to improve the accuracy of fare collection at the point of sale, collect and analyse fare collection data in a timely fashion, and reduce its overall costs. For riders, paying fares will be more convenient and boarding time will be reduced."

The project is expected to be operational by summer 2011 and will initially be installed in 350 buses across the region.
