New Jersey to roll out cashless toll booths
2 Nov 2011
Cashless toll booths could become the norm on pay-to-use roads worldwide after news that they are to expand in the US.
According to NorthJersey.com, Florida already uses an electronic system to avoid having to utilise manned toll booths and this trend is now being rolled out in New Jersey.
The first road to be affected will be the Henry Hudson Parkway, ending 60 years of real people collecting money from motorists.
It is thought all-electronic booths will then be brought in throughout the state, with the aim of reducing queuing and traffic jams, cutting pollution and saving money on wages.
The cashless booths will work using numberplate recognition cameras, which link up to online accounts for each driver that can be regularly topped up. Bills will be sent to those not registered with an account.
A cashless payment system has already been implemented on the UK's M6 toll road, which uses a pre-paid tag that can be attached to a car's dashboard and topped up with eMoney when needed.
