New Malaysian technology could lead to single-ticketing system
6 Oct 2010

A new Malaysian bus station has installed an advanced electronic ticketing system which could pave the way for a nationwide transit card.

The Bandar Tasik Selatan Integrated Transport Terminal in Kuala Lumpur has introduced the technology, reports Malaysian news website The Star Online.

Transport officials hope the new system will reduce fraud, while it could also provide the foundations for a single-ticketing network in the country.

Tan Sri Syed Hamid Albar, land public transport commission chairman, revealed that a national transit programme would take a long time to develop.

He told the news provider: "The system they are introducing here is a great improvement over what we have now.

"It is the objective of the government to see a single-ticketing system, including cashless transactions. But this cannot be done overnight."

The new terminal can handle around 40,000 passengers and 1,000 buses per day, with 87 different transport operators set to run services from the site.
