New national transit card could be launched in India
11 Oct 2010

A new national transit card could be launched in India if new government proposals come to fruition.

The Ministry of Urban Development has unveiled plans to develop a contactless smart card which would allow users to pay for travel on all forms of transport across the country, reports The Times of India.

The One India Card programme will initially be piloted on subway services in 63 different cities.

"The pilot scheme, which will be rolled out in select cities, is to be funded by the Centre [the government], and by respective transport operators in these cities," a senior ministry official told the news provider.

Should the programme prove to be a success, it will be extended throughout the country and could be compatible with other modes of transport such as taxis.

The functions of the card could also be extended to enable residents to pay toll charges on road, utility bills and parking fees.
