New Singapore metro loyalty scheme aims to encourage off-peak travel
2 Feb 2012

A new loyalty scheme has been launched in Singapore which aims to encourage passengers on the country's metro network to travel during off-peak periods.

The new Incentives for Singapore's Commuters programme, which has been launched by the Land Transport Authority, offers commuters the chance to earn credits every time they use the metro system, reports Railway Gazette International.

These credits can then be exchanged for entries into a lottery offering cash prizes, with triple credits awarded to those who travel outside the main morning rush hour period between 7.30am and 8.30am.

The scheme, which has been developed by National University of Singapore and Stanford University, was first trialled on a corporate bus network in Bangalore before being rolled out across the Singapore metro network.

It is not the first scheme of its kind in the country, with metro operator SMRT offering discounts of up to S$0.30 (£0.15) for weekday journeys made before 7.45am as part of its Early Travel Discount scheme.
