New transit card launched in Australia
19 Nov 2010

A new transit card for senior public transport passengers has been launched in Australia, it has been revealed.

Queensland-based transport operator Translink has launched its new free Seniors Card + Go Card which offers elderly residents the chance to prove they are eligible for concessionary travel and pay for their fare.

Rachel Nolan, transport minister for Queensland, revealed that cardholders would benefit from only having to carry a single card around with them.

"[They will also have] the option to store money on the card to pay for concession fares on bus, train and ferry services in southeast Queensland," she told The Brisbane Times.

From January 17th, seniors who sign up to the new scheme will also be able to travel for free following their second journey of the day.

The state government has confirmed that the programme will cost AD$1.2 million (£740,000) to run during this financial year.
