New transit card launched in Dubai
23 Jul 2010
A new transit card scheme has been launched in Dubai which will help improve safety on school buses.
Local bus operator School Transport Services (STS) will install a new smart card system on its 800-strong fleet of vehicles in September, reports thenational.ae.
Around 40,000 pupils will be issued with the cards which will record when users board and exit buses.
M L Augustine, the managing director of STS, claimed the new system will be able to track the location of student's during a journey.
He told the website: "We will immediately know if a child has not got out of the bus, maybe because he fell asleep. We can't take the risk of even one child being left behind. We can also monitor speed and harsh braking."
Around 84,000 private school pupils in Dubai use school buses, with STS providing transport for around half of those students.
The scheme comes as part of a range of new safety measures implemented by the local transit authority, including installing seat belts and introducing a maximum speed limit of 80kph.
