New transit card launched in Tyne and Wear
16 Feb 2011
A new transit card has been launched in Tyne and Wear for the region's light rail network, it has been revealed.
The new Pop cards, developed by Nexus, will initially replace season tickets and ID cards for passengers under 16 but the programme is set to be rolled out from next year to allow all riders to pay for their travel with the cards.
Nexus, the operator of the Metro network, is investing £15 million worth of government funding in the new project, which will also see 225 ticket machines replaced and the introduction of new card readers.
Bernard Garner, director general of Nexus, said: "Smartcards will soon be used by hundreds of thousands of public transport users, and we are one of the first regions in the UK to fully embrace the future of travel.
"The Pop card will make using public transport so much easier than now, and opens the way for people to get better value and pay more flexibly."
