New transit card programme set to be trialled on Indian railways
28 Feb 2011
A new transit card programme is set to be trialled on Indian railways, it has been revealed.
During his budget speech, railway minister Mamata Banerjee revealed that a Go-India smart card would soon be piloted in select regions to allow users to pay for their travel without the need for cash.
He said: "It will be a single window package for passengers to seamlessly pay for tickets for long distance, sub-urban and metro journeys."
Cardholders would be able to book tickets using the system at counters, vending machines and online, he added.
Furthermore, the minister confirmed that an improved version of the current anti-collision devices will be installed on three railway systems -Southern, South Central and South Western Railways.
This device will then be rolled out to other rail operators including Eastern, East Coast, East Central and South Eastern Railways.
