New transit card scheme in Vancouver could use 'fairer' payment system
22 Feb 2011

Commuters in Vancouver could benefit from a more just payment system following the introduction of a new transit card system, it has been revealed.

Regional transport agency Metro Vancouver is currently developing a new smart card-based transit system in the region, which will be implemented in 2013.

Speaking to The Province newspaper, Ken Hardie, a spokesman for Metro Vancouver, revealed that the organisation is considering using a distance-based fare structure to replace the current zone system.

"What we need to do is start developing the data and based on the actual usage we will adjust the whole tolling regime," he told the news provider.

However, it may not be implemented immediately due to the technical implications of such a move.

"We don't want to do both [smart card and fares] together because that would be quite chaotic from the technical side," he added.

Metro Vancouver is currently deciding what the new transit card will be called, having created a shortlist of Starfish, Compass or TPass.
