New transit card scheme launched in Cardiff
7 Oct 2010
A new transit card scheme has been launched in Cardiff today (6th October).
The Iff card will allow passengers on Cardiff Bus services to pay for travel without the need for cash, reports Wales Online.
Applicants will be issued with cards pre-loaded with £3 worth of credit, while cardholders will also be allowed a £3 'overdraft' to ensure they can travel without credit in emergencies.
Councillor Joe Carter, chairman of Cardiff Bus, revealed that the card name is a play on the word Cardiff.
He told the news provider: "Our aim is for Iff to become as much a part of the local language in Cardiff as the Oyster card in London.
"Iff is both a prepayment card and a season ticket and it is good to be able to report that having the right change will now be a problem of the past for most of our customers."
The card is based on the government-approved ISTO standard for smartcards, meaning the programme can easily be expanded to surrounding areas in the future.
