New transit card scheme launched on Indian bus network
13 Feb 2012
A new transit card scheme has been rolled out across a bus network in India, it has been revealed.
Indian transport operator Ahmedabad Janmarg has launched the new technology across its fleet of vehicles which operates across the Bus Rapid Transit System in the city of Ahmedabad, reports the ISO and Agent website.
The new contactless smart card is available for 25 rupees (£0.32) and allows passengers to pay for their journey without the need for cash.
Cardholders will be charged a minimum fare if they travel for less than 100 minutes on a single bus, with extra funds deducted when they exit the bus if they travel for a longer period.
The launch of the technology follows a protracted procurement process, with Ahmedabad Janmarg forced to cancel the seven-year contract it agreed with Kaizen Engineering Systems due to the Mumbai-based firm's inability to complete work on time.
A six-year joint-contract was then awarded to Indian firm Vayam Technologies and Spanish company GMV SA following a successful six-month trial.
