New transit card scheme set to be launched in Canada
10 Sep 2010

A new transit card scheme is set to be deployed across the Canadian city of Regina, according to reports.

The Leader Post has revealed that the Regina Transit authority will introduce the R-Card programme on its 105-strong fleet of buses over the coming weeks.

The authority has already begun installing smart card readers on its vehicles and plans to have the technology fully operational at the start of November.

Local residents will be able to use the R-Card to pay for bus travel as a direct replacement for the traditional paper tickets.

Regina Transit will be able to use the data collected on the system to learn about passengers' travel patterns and adapt their routes and schedules accordingly.

David Onodera, director of the regional transport body, confirmed that the project could evolve following its release to include loyalty programmes.

Furthermore, other services could eventually be paid for using the card, such as leisure facilities and tourist attractions.
