New transit card scheme to be launched in Pennsylvania
25 Jan 2012
A new transit card scheme is set to be launched in Pennsylvania which will eradicate the need for paper tickets on the city's transport network.
ACS, a subsidiary of Xerox, will implement the new system across all buses, subways and regional rail trains operated by the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA).
Passengers will be able to pay for their travel by simply swiping their contactless-enabled bank card or smartphone equipped with Near Field Communication (NFC) technology at the provided readers.
"This new system will allow commuters to spend more time where they want to be and less time getting there or waiting in line," said Dave Amoriell, chief operating officer of transportation and local government solutions at ACS.
SEPTA will also be provided with real-time data on their services for the first time to allow them to quickly respond to customer needs and travel habits.
ACS, which will implement the scheme over the next three years, has overseen similar projects in other US cities including New Jersey and New York.
