New transit card scheme to be launched in South Africa
26 Aug 2010
A new transit card scheme will be launched in South Africa, it has been revealed.
Regional bus operator Buscor will replace its current paper ticket system with contactless smart card technology on around 400 buses in Mpumalanga, reports engineeringnews.co.za.
Around 160,000 passengers will benefit from quicker transaction times and shorter queues following the implementation of Affiliated Computer Services' (ACS) Atlas ticketing system.
Johann Bester, Buscor information technology manager, claimed the new smart cards will be more efficient and cost-effective.
He told the news provider: "The technology will assist us in decreasing costs and the improved tracking of activities on the system will also help to control fraud."
The smart cards will use open technology, enabling other local bus operators to offer their services on the same card.
Officials expect the project to be fully operational in 14 months.
