New transit card scheme unveiled in Maryland
22 Sep 2010

A new transit card scheme has been launched in Maryland which will allow users to pay for travel without the need for cash.

From today (September 20th), residents will now be able use the CharmCard across the state's public bus, subway and light-rail systems.

Maryland Transit Administration (MTA), the regional transport authority who developed the project, confirmed the card is also valid on Metro subway services as well as regional bus systems

Angela Gates, a spokeswoman for Metro, told the Washington Post: "I think it's most beneficial for riders depending on where they are travelling to or from. They can use one fare card to pay for fares on multiple transit systems."

The card means residents will finally be able to travel between Baltimore and Washington with a single card. Plans for an integrated transit system were initially released in 1999.

Terry Owens, a spokesman for the MTA, told wtop.com: "We're very excited about this opportunity to finally link the Baltimore and Washington areas with public transportation."
