New transit card system launched in Australia
23 Feb 2011
A new bus transit card system was officially launched in Australia yesterday (21st February), with 200 residents signing up to the scheme on the first day.
The Canberra Times has reported that many senior passengers enrolled for the city's free MyWay card, which is pre-loaded with credit for a limited period.
The AUS$8 million (£4.95 million) system is only currently available to senior citizens, with the scheme set to be rolled out to all customers over the coming months.
Paul Peters, the Director of Transport Planning, told ABC Net: "The advantages of the card are that it's quicker for people to board and of course that other advantage for us is that it gives us planning data.
"Because people actually tap on and tap off on the bus we actually get information about people's travel patterns and that'll allow us to plan a better system in future."
Mr Peters added that most people will be better off under the new system, as it includes daily and monthly fare caps.
