New transit card system set to be used on Milwaukee's buses by 2014
24 Jan 2012

A new transit card system is set to be rolled out across buses in Milwaukee by 2014, it has been revealed.

Jackie Janz, spokeswoman for Milwaukee County Transit System (MCTS), revealed that the project, which was announced in April 2009, could be completed within two years.

The project was originally supposed to be completed in July 2010 but the complexity of the job has led to the transit agency enlisting the services of a consultancy firm to help them find a suitable company to operate the system.

"We would like this (system) to be installed today," Ms Janz told the Journal Sentinel. "But this is a monumental change for us and it is going to hit us on every level and we want to make sure it's done correctly."

The new system, which is being financed by a $7 million (£4.5 million) federal stimulus grant, will allow passengers on Milwaukee's buses to pay for their fare simply by swiping a smart card

Paper tickets are set to be phased out over a one or two year period following the implementation of the new smart card system.
