New Zealand students get discounted travel with transit card
23 Jun 2010
Students in New Zealand using a transit card are now eligible for discounted travel, it has been revealed.
Taranaki Regional Council (TRC) has confirmed that smart card holders using the new bus network in New Plymouth will receive a 20 per cent fare discount, reports stuff.co.nz.
Previously, school pupils in Oakura would pay $24 (£11.50) for 40 journeys but this has now been reduced to just $19.20.
TRC director of operations Rob Phillips said that a smart card discount was not possible in the scheme's early stages.
He told the news provider: "A discount for frequent users was not considered at that stage because it wasn't easy to accommodate it through the electronic smart card technology.
"So we honoured the existing term passes at this stage. We're working hard to get [these discounts] in place for the third term."
Passengers using the smart card can benefit from quick and secure cashless payment solutions, while queuing times are also reduced.
