Nice 'leading the way with contactless payments'
21 Apr 2011
The Cote d'Azur is leading the way when it comes to near field communications (NFC) and making payments using mobile phones.
This is according to the Riviera Times, which noted that the introduction of the technology in Nice was the first major pre-commercial launch in Europe.
Many local shops, buses and trams in the area now display the Cityzi logo, which shows people are able to pay for public transport or make purchases using contactless technology.
This brand name has been adopted by Nice and is being promoted by the Association Francaise pour le Sans Contact Mobile, which was established by Bouygues Telecom, Orange France and SFR, the news provider continued.
Anne Bouverot, executive vice-president for mobile services at Orange, said: "A customer survey conducted by AFSCM members in October last year found that users considered Citzy a true innovation - to help make people's lives simpler."
This comes after senior analyst at Juniper Research Howard Wilcox said that the development of NFC is creating more opportunities for payments to be made using mobile phones.
