NY smart card travel scheme 'to bring cheaper fares'
23 Oct 2009

Travel discounts could be available to those who use New York's prospective contactless smart card system, it has emerged.

New chairman and chief executive of the Big Apple's Metropolitan Transportation Authority Jay Walder has indicated that the new set-up may provide cheaper bus and train fares on weekends and at night-times when fewer people are using the services.

In an interview with the New York Times, Mr Walder said: "Time-of-day pricing might be very attractive."

Any change to the way people from New York make their way around their city will not be introduced for a number of years, but the planning process has started and 2014 has been mooted as a potential start date.

The city's travel boss has been credited with introducing London's contactless smart card travel system, Oyster, when he was working for Transport for London earlier this decade.

Mayor of London Boris Johnson announced recently that the cost of some tube and bus journeys - where an Oyster card can be used - will be rising in the new year.
