Oxford takes step towards single ticketing with new transit card scheme
5 Oct 2010
Oxford residents could soon be able to pay for bus travel with a single card following the release of a new transit card scheme in the region.
Bus operator Stagecoach has released it's StagecoachSmart card which allows users to purchase tickets across the firm's 160-strong fleet of vehicles, while it will also be compatible with next year's multi-operator system.
Rival operator Oxford Bus Company launched its own smart card programme three years ago and plans to release an updated version which can be used on both of the company's services.
Martin Sutton, managing director of Stagecoach in Oxfordshire, revealed that the new project represents a significant move towards a single ticketing system on the area's buses.
He said: "We know that value for money and convenience are vital if we are to encourage more people to switch from the car to our greener, smarter bus services.
"StagecoachSmart is a major step towards the introduction of co-ordinated timetables and multi-operator smartcard ticketing."
