Oyster card extension proves a big success
19 Jul 2010

The use of Oyster Cards on National Rail trains has proved to a big success with passenger groups.

Following the extension of the scheme in January, more than one million extra journeys have been made each week using the transit cards on National Rail services, according to Transport for London (TfL).

All 350 National Rail stations now accept Oyster pay-as-you-go cards, which has reduced travel costs for many Londoners.

Michael Abrahams, Forest Hill Society member, an organisation dedicated to improving the area, claimed commuters can save money with the scheme.

He told thisislocallondon.co.uk: "Fundamentally this has been a huge benefit. It actually works out cheaper for a lot of people because rather than having to buy bus and train tickets in two separate journeys, it can all be covered on Oyster."

Residents in the South and North-East of the city have significantly benefited from the extension, as Oyster was not previously accepted in these areas.
