Oyster card habits revealed by new survey
24 Nov 2011

A new survey carried out by YouGov has revealed some of the habits of Oyster card users on London's underground transit system.

It discovered that 76 per cent of people living in the capital possess an Oyster card to make the most of contactless payment technology, although the over-55s were the most likely not to have one.

Some 43 per cent said they use it either every day or between four and six times a week.

However, there was a somewhat unusual finding in that many of the cardholders only used theirs once or twice a week, even though they had full-time jobs in the city.

It could suggest they are using other forms of transport, which may mean smart cards could be useful in places other than the Tube.

Earlier this month, the London Assembly's transport committee warned Transport for London that any changes to the Oyster card system must meet the standards set by the Integrated Transport Smartcard Organisation if they are to succeed.
