Oyster card pay-as-you-go fares to rise
16 Oct 2009

People using contactless smart card Oyster cards in London will notice a hike in fares in the new year.

The capital's mayor Boris Johnson announced a number of hikes in public transport prices yesterday (Thursday October 15th).

Oyster card payments for trips between any Zone 1 destinations will go up from £1.60 to £1.80, while bus fares will rise by an average of 12.7 per cent from January 2010.

Mr Johnson claimed that raising fees was necessary to ensure the future of London's transport infrastructure.

"Nobody wants to make an announcement like this, especially when Londoners are feeling the effects of the recession," he noted, before adding that mistakes in the past and the current economic situation means that changes need to be made.

Meanwhile, Jay Walder - the man widely accredited with bringing the Oyster card to London - is currently looking at ways of introducing a similar contactless smart card system in New York.

The former Transport for London employee has just become Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority in the Big Apple.
