Oyster card scheme shortlisted in Hampshire
11 Aug 2011
Hampshire residents could see themselves using a contactless smart card to make journeys more efficient if proposals are given the green light.
According to the Portsmouth News, campaigners have called for a £2 million government investment to go towards the advanced payment technology.
The plans, which have been shortlisted by the local authority, could see travellers using the device to cover the cost of ferry, train and bus journeys across the county.
Following the success of London's Oyster Card, Transport for South Hampshire has joined forces with a number of city councils to bring about the move.
Councillor Mel Kendal said: "We're particularly pleased with the work we are doing towards the introduction of a public transport smart ticket system."
News of the proposals emerge after travel campaigners in Scotland called for a similar system to reduce queuing time for commuters across the country's transport network, which came about to follow in the footsteps of the Oyster Card.
