Oyster success revealed at one tube station
30 Mar 2010

London Underground has revealed plan to reduce the number of hours staff work in the ticket office at Arsenal Tube station.

The move has come about as a result of the success of the Oyster smart card travel system, which Transport for London (TfL) states now accounts for 80 per cent of tube journeys, the Islington Tribune reports.

Fears have been raised that the changes at Arsenal tube station could leave it unmanned for long stretches and also lead to a London-wide scheme to cut jobs at stations in order to save more money.

However, a spokesperson for TfL assured Londoners that the station would continue to be staffed at all times when trains are operating and that all stations currently operating a ticket office will continue to do so.

The Oyster card scheme has had a huge impact on the way people travel on London's underground, light rail and bus networks.

Currently, plans are being considered to extend it onto certain railway lines outside of the capital.
