Passenger group urges transport agency to test Philadelphia transit card system
28 Feb 2011

A passenger group in Philadelphia has urged the regional transport agency to test a proposed fare structure before implementing a transit card system, according to reports.

The Philadelphia Inquirer has revealed that the Delaware Valley Association of Rail Passengers has asked the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) to reconsider allowing train passengers to pay for their whole journey on the return leg.

According to the passenger group, this would invite "legal fare evasion" as commuters could simply take a different form of transport on their return journey and not pay any fee.

It has called for it to be trialled on two regional rail lines before the fare structure is used permanently for the incoming transit card system.

Richard Maloney, a spokesman for SEPTA, claimed the organisation is "anxious to try all different scenarios" for fare collection.

"The challenge is that it's such an open system. We want to find something that's convenient and doesn't increase bureaucracy and collects the proper revenue," he told the news provider.
