Passengers will 'benefit' from new Irish transit card scheme
23 Aug 2010

Rail and bus passengers in Ireland will significantly benefit from the roll-out of a new transit card scheme, it has been claimed

State transport agency CIE has revealed that annual bus and train pass holders will each be issued with a smart card which will allow them to pay for their travel quickly and easily, reports independent.ie.

The firm claimed the new technology would be more reliable than the previous paper ticket system which was faulty and open to corruption.

It said: "There will be some initial adjustment required but we are confident that the reliability of the smartcard validation technology will be of great benefit to all of our customers."

CIE has released the two cards as part of its 55 million euro (£45 million) Integrated Ticketing Project which will eventually allow commuters to travel across the country's transport network.

A series of trials will be held before the project is expected to be fully operational at the end of 2011.
