Pay offer raised for London Underground staff
14 Jul 2011

Staff working on the London Underground (LU) transit system have been offered a new five-year deal over pay.

Tube unions rejected two previous deals put forward, but the latest offer would see workers receiving a 4.75 per cent rise this year.

This is a 0.25 per cent increase on LU's last offer and it would see staff paid rises of 0.25 per cent in the subsequent year.

According to LU, the five-year offer will not take negative inflation into account, meaning workers are guaranteed a small rise each year.

"We ... have made what we believe is a very fair and affordable multi-year pay offer to the trade unions that will enable our employees’ salaries to keep pace with the cost of living," said Howard Collins, chief operating officer at LU.

It is likely to be hoped, if a decision is reached, that staff will not threaten any more walkouts over pay in the near future.

The latest Underground strikes took place last month, after a worker was sacked for supposed abusive behaviour towards colleagues.

Once he was reinstated, further planned walkouts were called off.
