Peru 'to adopt smart card travel'
15 Jul 2009
Smart card travel could become standard in Peru as the country implements contactless payments on itstransit systems.
The South American nation is looking to implement contactless tickets which operate in a similar way to sQuidcard.
IT and business outsourcing firm ACS is to operate the technology behind the smart card travel initiative.
President of the company Dave Amoriell says: "ACS is making a significant difference in the lives of millions of people by making their commute more convenient, safe and efficient."
The $200 million (£123 million) 14-year project is to see contactless ticketing implemented across the City of Lima's transit systems, with 700,000 passengers per day expected to benefit.
In the UK, meanwhile, sQuidcard works with the Integrated Transport Smartcard Organisation to put in place interoperability standards for smart card travel networks.
Bolton is one city where the contactless smart card is in the pipeline to be made available as a payment option when travelling on public transport.
