Pittsburgh plans to use multi-purpose smart cards
4 Dec 2009
The people of Pittsburgh could soon benefit from a contactless smart card system throughout the city's transport infrastructure.
According to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, officials in the city are planning to implement the technology on buses, at bike rental points and in parking lots.
Randy Vanderhoof, executive director of the Smart Card Alliance called the project "ambitious" but "doable".
Earlier this year, he claimed that there will be a number of developments within the smart card sector in the coming 12 months - and it would appear that the Pittsburgh plan is just one of these.
Steve Bland, Chief Executive Officer of the Port Authority of Allegheny County, Pittsburgh, told the newspaper about the planning process for the smart card system.
"When we looked at smart cards, we asked, 'How do we leverage this investment in transportation to make a smarter network in Pittsburgh?'", he said. "If we have a combined card for transit and parking, it opens up options."
