Plans for Harrogate transit system gain support
17 Aug 2011
Individuals who use the London Underground transit system to make journeys on a regular basis could wonder what happens to the disused trains.
New plans, which are receiving increased support from council officials, could see a number of old carriages from the network's District Line used on Harrogate railway.
According to reports, intentions to use the old trains between Leeds, Harrogate and York were given full support at a meeting held by Harrogate Chamber of Trade and Commerce last week.
The plans, which have been dubbed the Harrogate Metro, could cost up to £150 million to carry out and would involve up to 30 trains on the Docklands Light Railway system.
Project director Mark Leving, former Managing Director of First Hull Trains, told the meeting that the move was vital as a result of "no prospects of getting new build diesel or electric trains due to their cost and the current policy of allocation of new trains to the south east".
Last month, Transport for London announced the introduction of a new fleet of trains on the Victoria line in a bid to phase out the old carriages from the 1960s.
