Plans for more smart card usage in Rotterdam
17 Nov 2009
Public transport passengers in Rotterdam, Holland may soon be required to use the city's local smart card for travel.
Expatica reports that city policymakers are aiming to implement a system where only the OV-chipkaart can be used to pay for bus and tram services.
No plans have been finalised but the target is to discard the use of paperless tickets by February 11th next year.
The so-called chipkaart system is currently used for Rotterdam's Metro service - a move that was made permanent at the start of 2009.
Dutch politicians are looking to introduce the smart card technology across the whole of the country, with paperless tickets potentially en route to becoming a thing of the past.
Meanwhile, in Bolton, Greater Manchester in the UK, ITSO-enabled smart cards launched by the local council - alongside eMoney network sQuidcard - can be used to pay for Arriva bus travel in the region.
