'Revolutionary' contactless smart card travel could link Welsh cities
2 Feb 2010

The Welsh Assembly has called for fresh consideration of a contactless smart card travel system that has been hailed as "revolutionary" to link various towns and cities in Wales.

BBC South East Wales reports that the futuristic transit system is hoped to solve the problem of traffic congestion in the country.

The ULTtra (Urban Light Transport) project promised residents a contactless smart card system to pay for travel in driverless pods on a track similar to that of a monorail.

A recent report from the Welsh Assembly's Enterprise and Learning Committee has called for it to be considered that the areas of Cardiff, Swansea and Newport could be linked by a light rail system.

Contactless smart card payments are already up and running in the town of Bolton, Greater Manchester thanks to eMoney technology from sQuid.

Residents can already pay for travel on Arriva buses with their sQuidcard and taxi payments are set to follow later in the year.
